It's once again time to dive into another year in the Billboard charts. If you are new this week, I had a goal recently to determine what the top songs of all time were based on a formula that I came up with to keep track of the top songs on the Billboard charts each year. Here's the methodology: each year of the charts I go week by week, giving points to the songs that make the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The #1 song gets 10 points, the #2 song gets 9 points, all the way down to the #10 song getting 1 point. I could've done the whole Hot 100 like this, but that would've been too time consuming, so I just stuck to the top 10 for now. If you are wanting to check out previous years that I've done, you can follow the links at the bottom of each list to browse through the years or you can search the blog archive on the right. It's my hope that as you scroll through this list that you take time to actually listen to the songs as you go instead of just looking at the title. This has been a great way for me to learn of new music and be reminded of songs that I may have forgotten about and I feel this can have the same effect on you, regardless of your taste in music. So without further delay, let's see what the first year of the 1980's had to offer!
10- "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" - Billy Joel
9- "Do That to Me One More Time" - Captain & Tennille
8- "Coming Up (Live at Glasgow)" - Paul McCartney & Wings
7- "Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)" - Pink Floyd
This past week I finished revealing my top 100 most popular songs of the 1970's. I got a good number of views for the posts from 100 - 11, but a surprisingly few amount people looked at the actual top 10 most popular songs of the 1970's, so if you are one of those people who haven't, go check that out! Before I move onto the 1980's next week, it's time to stop for a moment and share my top 10 personal favorite hits from the 1970's. I'm surprised by how many people are still confused with this project. If it says "MOST POPULAR" at the top of the list, that's the most popular songs of that year/decade based on Billboard chart performance. I went through the whole Billboard Hot 100 from 1958 to now to figure those lists out, assigning points to the songs each week. If it says "FAVORITE" at the top, that's my own personal favorite songs. That should be a simple distinction, so don't let yourself get confused. This here is a list of my favorite hits from the 1970's. You'll notice I use the word "hits" with this. That's because, for various reasons, I decided to limit myself to songs that made it into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 at some point during the decade. I hope you enjoy!

If you are new this week, I had a goal recently to determine what the top songs of all time where based on a formula that I came up with to keep track of the Billboard charts. I went through each year of the charts week by week giving points to the songs that made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. As pertaining to this decade list, there are a lot of songs whose runs spanned between two years, thus they get short-changed on my yearly lists because I go by calendar year only there. This is made up for in this decade list as I took into account their entire run, which includes the songs whose runs spanned two decades. I include their entire run in the decade where they made the biggest impact. With this list coming to an end, it will soon be time to start the 80's, but first I will give you my personal favorite hits from the 70's, so stay tuned for that!
