Top 10 FAVORITE Songs of 2020

I haven't made use of this blog in a while. Not since May when I posted my end of decade music lists. I abandoned my weekly posts about the Billboard charts. If some people miss that, I apologize. It just came to a point where I wasn't enjoying it. But I've still followed the charts. I've just kept my thoughts to my personal social media pages when I had thoughts to give. And in weeks where there weren't any good songs or I didn't feel like giving thoughts, it was nice to simply do other things. But when it came to this particular year-end list of favorite songs, I had to bring back this blog and post it here because this is my favorite list to put together every year. Whereas I also posted my list of most popular song of 2020 and my list of favorite hit songs on my social media, I felt this list deserved better. The parameters here are that it had to debut on the Hot 100 in 2020. And it had to be a new song. So no "Blinding Lights." And no Christmas classics. Now given that I haven't expressed my thoughts as much this year, my choices for this list should come at more of a surprise, which makes this exciting. I'm giving my top 10, then I'll have honorable mentions below.

DrogeMiester's Top 30 FAVORITE Songs of the 2010s

How does one summarize an entire decade's worth of music into one single post? This is the task that I set out to do this week and it was a rather daunting one. Creating lists of things is something I find fun, if you couldn't tell. And I've made lots of different lists this past decade, especially since starting this particular blog about mid-decade. But this felt like something completely different. This is more than just me taking a group of songs from a certain year or era and putting them all together. This was an opportunity for me to reflect upon life and try to tell my story from the last decade through a series of songs that really represent who I am and the journey that I have gone through. Thus I took this super seriously. And in doing so, I took all of my end-of-year lists from the past decade and completely scrambled them, mashed them together, then moved things around more in order to come up with the appropriate group of songs that made the most impact on me this past decade. I don't know if anyone remembers specific orders of songs from past years' lists, but if you do then you might find yourself quite surprised at how things have shaken up here because it is quite a bit different. And that's perfectly OK in my mind because it shows evolution in taste.

In terms of the parameters of this list, these are new songs that debuted on the Hot 100 during the past decade, from 2010 to 2019. Why do they have to have had to debut on the Hot 100? Because otherwise this would be nearly impossible. There's probably thousands of songs that get written every year and I've only scratched the surface of what I've discovered. So I like having a tangible pool to work with. It makes the task manageable. And if you're curious, at some point this year I will reveal the final results of the most popular songs of the decade. I'm just waiting for a few more songs to finish out their runs in the top 10 so that I can determine what decade they belong in. If you're too impatient to wait for that, Billboard revealed their "official" list weeks ago. Go search it out on their site. My list will have plenty of similarities, but also some significant differences, so look forward to that. And finally, why 30 songs this time around when I usually do a top 10 with 10 honorable mentions? Well... that's just how it panned out this time. I was actually going for 25, but there ended up being a few songs that I just couldn't leave out, so I went 30. DrogeMiester's Top 10 FAVORITE Songs of 2019

It's time for one of my favorite lists to do each year, my top 10 favorite songs of 2019. The first thing that I will say here is that those of you who checked out my least favorite songs of 2019 list will notice that I added an additional parameter. With that list, I said that in order to be eligible a song not only had to debut on the Hot 100 in 2019, but it also had to make Billboard's official year end Hot 100 for 2019. That's because I didn't want to filter through 200+ bad songs to come up with a silly list that 30 of my friends will quickly glance through and forget about 10 minutes later. No such additional parameter will be added to this favorite list simply because I enjoy going through all my favorite songs. There were 50+ candidates this year that I took a close look at. Yes, it took a long time to get it right. But it was an enjoyable process and I am proud of my final results. So all a song had to do in order to be eligible was to debut on the Hot 100 at some point during 2019. And it had to be a new song. Sorry, I didn't count "Jingle Bells" or "Blue Christmas," which both debuted for the first time. But everything else was fair game. So I hope you enjoy going through these songs because several of them didn't get the attention they deserved, which I think is a real shame.

DrogeMiester's Top 10 FAVORITE SONGS of 2018

Those of you who have been following my weekly Billboard Analysis posts throughout 2018 will know that I've been doing a lot of complaining at the state of the Billboard Hot 100. I've even become so frustrated that I've stopped covering a lot of the new arrivals, especially since album bombs have flat-out plagued the Hot 100 this year like a rotten, smelly, destructive disease that almost caused me to give up on this whole weekly post. Truth be told, though, it's not been a bad year for music. It's just been a bad year for POPULAR music. There was a lot of great songs that charted. They just didn't do as well as I would've liked them to, which is what made this year frustrating. Point in case, a few weeks ago on my Facebook page, I created a top 10 list, with 10 honorable mentions, based on new entries on Billboard's year-end Hot 100. And I struggled to find 20 songs worthy of that list. But in doing this list here, I could've honestly done a top 50 and still been forced to cut songs I really liked. And out of those 20 songs from said list of year-end Billboard hits, only one of them made the final cut here, with a second one being included the honorable mentions. So yeah, that's the type of year it's been. Which is why I'm honestly excited to share this list of my favorite songs of 2018.

As far as my parameters here go, songs that are eligible to be included are new songs that debuted on the Billboard Hot 100  during the calendar year of 2018. So no, this is not based on Billboard's year-end Hot 100, nor do I consider just any song that was written and released to the public in 2018. Just the songs that debuted on the Hot 100 during 2018. I also had to include the additional parameter of it being a "new" song because I ran into a bit of a conundrum in 2016 when Leonard Cohen passed away, resulting in his original version of "Hallelujah" to chart for the first time. It didn't seem fair to include that in the list that year, even though it would've obviously been the best song. We've also had a yearly tradition recently of classic Christmas songs debuting on the charts during the holiday season. And while it would be fun to include "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Sleigh Ride" or "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" on my list this year, I didn't consider them as eligible because they're not new. I don't necessarily have a specific definition of what "new" means in this instance. I just take it case by case. So with all of that out of the way, I proudly present to you my top 10 favorite songs of 2018, with 10 honorable mentions in the comment section.

DrogeMiester's Top 10 FAVORITE EDM Songs of 2017

Last year as a part of my end of year music lists, I decided to add in my favorite EDM songs of the year. I follow the EDM charts just as often as I do the regular Hot 100 since it is my favorite genre, so why not throw together a list of my favorites from that chart? Even though that list didn't get as much attention as the other lists I had done, I had so much fun putting it together and looking back on it throughout the year that I had to do it again this year. So here we are. My personal favorite EDM songs of 2017. To be eligible for this list, the songs had to debut on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic charts during 2017. Like with my favorite songs of the year, the songs also had to be fairly new songs as well. Within reason. A remix of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" debuted this year around Halloween. I didn't count that. And I also didn't count all of Lady Gaga's music that debuted on the EDM charts after her Super Bowl halftime performance. My hope here, since you may not have heard many of these, is that you actually take the time to listen to these songs instead of just looking at the title. DrogeMiester's Top 10 FAVORITE SONGS of 2017

With the year 2017 coming to a close and the Billboard calendar having ended last week, it's that time of year to dive into the end of year lists. Last week I revealed the top 10 most popular songs of 2017 based on my own personal system of following the Billboard charts. This week I reveal to you my personal favorite songs of 2017. There's no real science to this. I didn't do a deep examination of how well constructed the songs are musically or how well written the songs are lyrically in order to create this list. These are simply the songs I enjoyed most or the songs that made the biggest impact on me emotionally. The only two requirements I have for this list is that each song had to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 during the calendar year of 2017 and it had to be a fairly recent song. I don't have a set in stone cut-off date for the latter, but I simply say within reason. "Felix Navidad" by Jose Feliciano, "A Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives, "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" by Andy Williams and "Last Christmas" by Wham! all debuted on the charts this year. But I considered them too old to qualify, so I didn't include them. Most of the rest were fair game in my book, though. Since there were a lot of good songs to pick from, you can call these the best of the best.

DrogeMiesters Top 10 FAVORITE EDM Songs of 2016

Ever since the Billboard calendar year ended in the middle of December, I've been working on getting my end of year lists out to you. The goal was to release them once a week from December 19 through January 9. That's four lists in four weeks. I did good with my first two lists, my list of the most popular songs of 2016 and my list of my personal favorite songs of 2016. But creating my list of my least favorite songs of 2016 proved difficult, so that threw things off a bit. Then when I went to go create my list of my favorite EDM songs, that took even longer. But this time around it was a lot of fun because electronic music has always been my favorite ever since I was young. I love the sound and the creativity. Some people complain that it's just made behind a computer and not with real instruments. I could argue that in depth, but the short version is that that's a very ignorant take on electronic music. Eligible for this list was any song that debuted on the Hot Dance/Electronic charts in 2016, a lot of which I really enjoyed, which is why this took so long to wade through. I hope you enjoy!

The year 2016 is coming to an end and since the Billboard charts are a week ahead of the rest of the world as pertaining the end of the year, last week I revealed the top 10 most popular songs of 2016. This week it's time to give you my personal favorite songs of 2016. The last few months, as I've been revealing my personal favorite songs of each year from this decade, I've been saying that eligible are any songs that debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 during the calendar year (not just songs that reached the top 10 like my favorite hits lists) as opposed to songs that were released during the year or were popular on the charts during the year. And while I'm still holding to that, I snagged a loophole with that system as Leonard Cohen's classic song "Hallelujah" from 1984 debuted on the charts for the first time following his passing. So I'm adding that the song has to have been released within the last few years. I don't know exactly when that cutoff is, but 1984 is beyond that. So that song sadly won't be on here. But recent covers of the song that charted are totally legit. With that out of the way, let's begin!

In terms of what's eligible for this list, it's not the songs that were most popular during this year or the songs that were released this year. It's the songs that debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 during the calendar year. With some songs that's all the same year. But many songs that's either two or three different years. And I'm not limiting myself to the songs that made the top 10 like I do with my favorite "hits" of each decade lists. DrogeMiester's Top 10 FAVORITE Songs of 2010

We're making our way through our current decade in my billboard project and, in doing so, I wanted to do things a bit differently with this decade. I don't want to reveal the final results of this billboard project until 2016 is over so that I can have the most up-to-date version of my list of most popular songs of all time. That means I could either post lists of the most popular songs from 2010 to 2015 over the course of six weeks and then do nothing for three months. Or I could space them out from now to the end of the year. I've chosen the latter. And in between years, I'm taking advantage of the opportunity to post my top 10 favorite songs of each year from this decade. This is something I've done on a personal level at the end of each year, but now I get to consolidate all those lists into one place. And I get the chance to revise each list based on certain parameters that I came up with last year. My parameters here are that, in order to be eligible for the list, the song had to debut on the Hot 100 during the calendar year.
